6th graders are challenged with finding their love of reading and making connections that keep them hooked. I introduce Homer's Odyssey in hopes that they will find a love of the story so when they read it again in high school, unabridged, they will be able to engage on a deeper level. In order to capture an eleven year old's attention and teach them the skill of comparing text, we read Rick Riordan's Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters. The students are amazed at the connections to The Odyssey. Students are expected to write comparative essays which require direct evidence from the text. We currently only have a handful of Riordan's books in the classroom making it challenging for students to reference the text. Students are passing books between five students all while trying to focus on their essays.
