Big Books for Shared Reading

Funded May 27, 2022

Being a librarian at an inner-city elementary school, I have learned that books are a luxury item that most of my students do not have access to at home. In the past 5 weeks, I have also learned that my students are eager to come to library to experience being read to and are developing a love of literature and books! We started with the basics of how to behave during story time/read aloud the first few weeks of school (sitting on your pockets, eyes on the reader/voice level zero/hands and feet still). Very quickly, my students are learning to make predictions, comprehend, evaluate, and synthesize with a variety of engaging texts. I know my students love and appreciate the Big Books because I have heard them say things such as, "I can see the pictures and words/these are cool/read it again!" The other day, I had a regular sized book for story time, and I was met with groans because they would have rather had a Big Book.). I am forever grateful for your generosity and shared passion for literacy.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Ellison
