Virtual Pig Dissection Experience
Funded May 28, 2020Thank you so much for your generosity. With your donations I was able to purchase a year virtual pig dissection that was used for my last semester students and will be used for this current semester as well. Due to school closures from Covid my anatomy and physiology students were not able to do the actual fetal pig dissection that was their end of the year project. Many students took my class just to get this experience. They were so sad to not have that opportunity, but this virtual lab was able to at least give them some of the experience while they were continuing their learning at home. This lab was able to benefit 3 sections of the course last year, which was approximately 120 students. It is nice to have a whole year license because this year it will continue to benefit two class sections with approximately 80 students.
Students were able to virtually dissect the digestive, cardiorespiratory, urogenital, endocrine, and skeletal systems of the pig. During each exercise, they removed organs or other anatomical structures from each of the systems and their functions were displayed along with a photo and/or video of the structure at the time of removal. Students were then quizzed on what they have learned; they were asked to replace the organs based on their name or function. A test followed the complete dissection.
Students noted that even though it wasn't as cool as doing the lab in person they still found it interesting a valuable to the class. The said that they learned from the lab and were able to see certain structures in a new way then just the images in their text book. Thank you again for helping the students continue to do science experiments while learning at home.”
With gratitude,
