All of my students are always excited to have a variety of supplies to use in the classroom that ignite their creativity and desire to learn. • Learning Spanish Through Art!

    Funded Oct 24, 2022

My students and I are extremely thankful for all of your kindness and support. Because of your help we have been having a blast creating art while learning a new language. My students continue enhancing their creativity as well as their language skills with a variety of art projects and activities. Hispanic cultural lessons have never been better.

My students were very excited to see that we had received new art supplies for our Spanish class. They were thrilled to use new colored pencils and crayons. They were amazed about not having to share a pair of scissors or glue stick because everyone had the chance to have one. It meant everything for them and ignited their creativity even more, as well as their eager to learn Spanish.

Every lesson has been more engaging than ever. Students ask for our Spanish Art time more than before too. We have spoken about how blessed we are for receiving these donations and how grateful we should feel. Additionally, how important it is to be kind and respectful to these new supplies by taking good care of them so that all the students of our school can use. Now we are always ready for our Spanish learning journey.”

    With gratitude,

  • Cultivating Spanish Literacy and Growing Cultural Understanding

    Funded May 28, 2020

I am grateful that my scholars have the opportunity to have an authentic books library in our Spanish class. School looks very different this year, but that does not keep me from providing the necessary tools and experiences for my scholars to succeed in their Spanish class. Teaching with authentic cultural texts of various kinds in a foreign language class is essential. Authentic materials provide real-life examples of language used in everyday situations. I have designed and carried out a few interactive reading and listening comprehension tasks with these texts along with appropriate activities that provide my scholars with the chance to apply or practice what they have learned.

These authentic texts are great for my scholars. They are context and age appropriate, and they fit the scholars linguistic level as well. I use the same text with a variety of activities. I like to give my scholars opportunities to make meaning with a text. For example, I teach them to use their background knowledge, contextual cues, and different interpretive strategies to construct meaning. One way to assess my Spanish learners' ability to deal with the language in an authentic text is giving them interpretive tasks. I give them the opportunity to analyze and explain their conclusions about meaning. Because of social distancing, the way I do read aloud and independent reading in class has changed. Technology has now turned into an essential tool in my teacher's toolbox, as you might have seen in the photos I shared. But we enjoy our readings anyhow.

My scholars are having a great time with these readings. I personally like to give them some background information about the author, which gives me the opportunity to teach them some more about the culture of the target language. I teach kindergarten through fifth grade and they all enjoy the books. Especially the illustrations! We have a blast doing choral reads, describing the pictures, making connections with real life situations, and so on. There is so much you can do with one book, imagine how much we will be doing and will accomplish these book sets. It's just amazing! Finally, I would like to express that I am very pleased with the outcome of this project and can't wait to keep incorporating these reads in my lessons all year long and the years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gonzalez

My goal is to create a distance learning environment that allows my students to connect with the language through authentic learning experiences. This setting will allow my non-native speakers or heritage learners to prepare for real-world experiences using the target language. One of the teaching strategies that I will be using during our distance learning is reading texts aloud, which will help all of my students access the material and develop their skills as active listeners. Reading is an essential element in my foreign language classroom. Having authentic Spanish literature as a part of my teaching toolbox can be extremely helpful to my students’ language acquisition experience. For that reason, I wish to have an authentic library, which is nothing but texts that are written in the original, natural language of the authors. These authentic Spanish books will allow my language learners to see a variety of examples of how an entire population of our world uses Spanish in their everyday life situations. The rich language found in these books will captivate their interest in the Hispanic culture and consequently, enhance their desire to learn the language. My students and I will look forward to having an authentic classroom library with a variety of genres, filled with colors and diversity that includes intriguing selections for them when schools re-open. They will aspire to manage the library themselves, self-select books, understand genres, conduct book talks with each other, make book recommendations and most significantly, spend time reading daily.
