Our big classroom goal is student independence. For my students, independence can mean many things such as requesting items, tying their shoes, making a sandwich, ordering food, driving, having a job, and more. When students gain more skills to be independent, they can lessen the stress on their family and participate in their communities in positive and safe ways.
Within the classroom, I want to be able to give students more tools to get them ready for life outside of school. These resources will help our students learn these vital skills to become productive members of their community.
In our classroom, we will be cooking twice a week to practice good hygiene when handling food, reading recipes, measuring ingredients, safe kitchen etiquette, and cleaning. Also in our classroom, we will have a break area where students can go when they feel sad, mad, frustrated, and tired. This place will have sensory items that will help calm and ease students so they can learn to cope with their emotions positively. Lastly, we will have independent work stations for student work. Having an organized system will help students to complete tasks with minimal adult help. Independent stations will require a drawer organization with binders to hold their work and a filing system. The resources we need are cooking, cleaning, work stations, supplies for work stations, and sensory items. With all my students' different abilities, I want to create a place where they can be successful and transfer their success to other environments.
