I am a finishing my first year as a special education teacher in a Title One school in a rural, very high poverty area and district. This last year has been an awakening and shock to me, to say the least. I had never grown in an environment like my kids are doing. When school started, and basically the whole year, my students did not have any school supplies. Unless I provided paper, notebooks, pencils, just basic needs, my students went without school supplies. The students loved my classroom this first year as I tried to make it a homey, safe, and calming environment. I have hung outdoor string lights and have lamps everywhere I have access to plug into, to create a warm ambience instead of the cold harsh overhead lights. This year, I want to add another cozy, calming corner on the other side of my library. I have one chair in a cozy corner but the kids tend to race to sit in the cozy chair when they finish their work. I want to provide another. I want my kids to feel at home and my classroom inviting since I have my students for more time than they spend at home. I am their school mom. After all my home visits this past year, I realized what kind of homes my kids are living in, some without running water. There are some supplies I need for my students and items used to help me with instruction. I hope you will consider donating to my classroom. It's no secret that teachers do not make much, so these extra things I want to give my students I must pay for.
