Fourth grade is an exciting and challenging year where reading, writing, and reading comprehension are key elements. Having a classroom library that provides a wide range of reading materials will motivate my students to improve their reading and vocabulary skills by encouraging independent and recreational reading. My students will have to take a very important state assessment by the end of the school year. They will need to be prepared to read long passages and answer a long and complex set of reading comprehension questions. To be ready for this test, we will need to build a strong set of fluency, reading, and vocabulary skills. During the school year, we will be practicing with passages for the test, but as a reading teacher, I feel my students deserve to have a more authentic and enjoyable reading experience that will actually teach them to love reading as much as I do while preparing for the test. Having books that interest them and teach them about the world will make this possible. I often hear how students get to dislike reading just because they ONLY read long passages, and I wanna be able to give them the opportunity in my classroom to get immersed in literature they can actually enjoy. Having a classroom library with a variety of books that will interest them will be a game-changer. It will not only help my students improve their reading fluency and comprehension, but it will boost their vocabulary, English language acquisition, and stamina for reading!
