  • Culturally Relevant Texts for Literature Circles

    Funded Jul 20, 2021

This donation of books for our classroom literature circles is a game changer! I have students select books for mini-book clubs, or literature circles, to read in class. Though our librarian does a great job stocking the library with high-interest, culturally relevant literature, we often do not have enough copies to support doing a literature circle. With this gift, we are able to have enough copies for students to form these small groups and read the same book together!

After students read their agreed upon chapters, they have a guided group discussion based on their assigned "jobs" for the circle. One leads the discussion, one summarizes, one finds quotes, and one illustrates an important scene. These jobs build depth of knowledge for students as they read and aid in the student-led discussion. It's a joy to see students being able to read texts that they enjoy, are culturally relevant, and further their knowledge and social responsibility.

Thank you again for your generous donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Setiarto

  • Ortho's Urban Garden

    Funded Jul 20, 2021

Thank you for your donation to Ortho's Urban Garden! We received all of the supplies and our Gardening Club is ecstatic. They are looking forward to seeing the variety of seeds sprout. We have planned a planting party and are ready to plant them in the gardening boxes the students painted and customized. These boxes have really brightened up the quad. They've already garnered interest from the general student body. Our next steps are to make sure we are all watching over the seedlings and tending to the garden. We can't wait to see them sprout!”

  • Second Screen

    Funded Jul 20, 2021

I am so appreciative of your donation. This technology update will allow me to better serve my students, especially as we are still dealing with the unknown demands caused by this pandemic. With this technology, I'll be able to deliver instruction more effectively and provide the students of my art club with a high resolution screen to do their creative editing on. We are so very grateful!”

  • Creative Minds Club

    Funded Oct 12, 2020

We were overjoyed to receive the art resources. The group leaders and I carefully packaged the art supplies following Covid protocols and our club members were able to come to the school to pick them up. They brought smiles to everyone's faces and a creative outlet.

Also, with these supplies, we did a paint event which was graciously donated to us by USC Splash. An instructor led us all into painting a beautiful mountain landscape! It was so therapeutic for all.

Finally, we continue to make art weekly. The student leaders present discrete art lessons to all club members and help them develop their artistic skills through the use of these materials that were donated. You can find some of their art from this year at this Padlet: https://padlet.com/achang0011/686qi2xrhnn7ostx.

We even have leftover supplies to continue creating into next year. Your generosity will keep this club going for months to come! Thank you so much. We all appreciate it.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Setiarto

Students will use the materials to create artwork on various themes per week. They will learn new techniques while expressing their individual creativity. Each week, they will create something new that allows them to de-stress and express! Once we get supplies, we will explore color theory and acrylic paint techniques! At the end of the school year, the club will have a showcase to display the artwork from this year. We hope to have physical gallery space (if conditions permit), but also will be building a website to showcase the amazing art that students have created during distance learning. We know that our art will showcase the beauty, creativity, and resiliency of our students during this challenging time. The materials from this fundraiser will be crucial to helping students have the supplies they need to express the art within their hearts!
