  • Building Books for the Black Belt's Future Authors

    Funded Mar 23, 2022

Thank you so much for these resources, they have provided me opportunities to allow students to expand their creativity and develop fully fleshed out products that are indicative of high skill.

I thank the Donorschoose community for so much support over the last few years. It has been instrumental in achieving the type of gains I truly believe all students inherently have. Again with much Gratitude, I plan to use these resources to expand the scope of the initial project to reach more students and provide an opportunity for their voices to be heard in the local community but also at large.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Richardson

  • Building a Better Sense of Self-Worth Through Literacy

    Funded Feb 28, 2021

Thank you so much for all the support, both financially and monetarily. Reading in my classroom takes place in an array of ways and these books give my scholars options that support the overall goal of representing their identity. I am forever thankful for it. All of my students are enjoying the books, but my students who do mot identify as cisgender have spoke the most about how great it feels to be seen in the material.

Many of these books helped stock the classroom library but I have introduced SEL lessons based on the ideas of tolerance and social advocacy thanks to the rich subject matter that is available. Thank you all for supporting my scholars, we could not be more grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Richardson

  • Addressing Reading Underachievement Through Culturally Responsive Anchor Texts

    Funded Feb 28, 2021

Thank you so much for the support. My students love the books. Given that I work with students that are labeled as at-risk, many of the topics these books cover mis-labeling and rebelling against societal labels. These books have helped guide students to understand close readings and helped them gain advance level annotated and coding skills.

These students have done a great job of practicing deep reading in the classroom. my students read at every chance they get as they genuinely enjoy the text selection. These students have demonstrated a masterful ability to use these books to guide their own interpretations of the world.

My students who identity as LGBTQ+ have really enjoyed the varied representation, which is the best thing. Every child deserves to see themselves in the available literature.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Richardson

  • Transforming the World Through Books

    Funded Sep 20, 2020

Thank you all for the support on this project. Bringing culturally relevant text to our students is paramount as we are able to see them thrive and grow and cultivate a sense of self.

My student have enjoyed these texts and they have greatly increased their access to books that have characters and lives that look like theirs. Students are now happy to read and they crave independent time to do so. None of this is possible without you all helping me. I really appreciate it! Thank you guys for all that you do and bless you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Richardson

  • Exploring Historical and Contemporary Struggles Through Popular Texts.

    Funded Jun 17, 2020

Thank you so much for the support. I was able to secure these texts and my students were able to learn so much about anti-racism, racism, and discrimination. Particular, they got to finally see themselves centered in the literature. I used the kendi book as an anchor text for my 9th grade students and we traversed history over the course of the semester, contextualizing the information.

I used the other book as part of the Little Green Library reading project I started at my school. This project is to get students engaged in community service and understand how they have the power to positively impact their community. The students loved having such amazing books in the class. They would always use any spare time to read and it really made the environment, text rich! I appreciate you all so much, as without you all this would not be possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Richardson

These novels will be used in conjunction with state literacy and writing standards to engage students in thinking critically about their place in the world around them. Given that these students are black and brown, it is extremely important that they see themselves in contemporary literature and understand how their current struggles are an example of the historical state of being for people of color. Students will participate in guided reading assignments, classroom discussions, and a service project portion that requires them to think about how they can give back to their community. As a youth, I remember just how important it was to see myself in literature and see my unique lived experience being honored and it is important that as an educator I help students discover themselves, their place in the world, and their sense of justice and advocacy.
