These books are more than just independent reading. These books are windows, doors, and mirrors with which students can interact. My students deserve a class library (we do not have a school library) that reflects their hopes, dreams, wants, fears, and lives. Many of my students are English language learners and people of color. A "classics" library is not the goal. The goal is to introduce, reintroduce, and promote reading, self advocacy, voice, and discussion skills through these socially aware books. "All adolescents are reading less. There is a calamitous drop-off in students' reading after age 13 and a downward trend in voluntary reading by youth at middle and high school levels over the past two decades." -Penny Kittle Thank you for considering this project!
