We have some old infrastructure, carving tools, and a small press. Block printing has some prohibitive consumable costs. Getting some carving blocks and good quality printmaking paper could enrich the learning of our students. Student learning is increased because the student has to plan their design in reverse. The concept is initially challenging for them as they always seem to want to use text, but it has to be reversed to be read correctly. The students learn about relief carving and how it can be manipulated to a variety of effects. The students learn a great deal about positive and negative space in art and how to use it to increase their level of composition skills. They also learn about the ability to create multiple images from the same source which can be used in a number of ways, from creating a limited edition of prints to creating a design on fabric. The technique has multiple possibilities going forward in an art student's learning.
