The iPad, when equipped with a communication application, is able to give my students a means to communicate. I will start by teaching my students the location of "core" words; words that makeup almost 80% of what we say (e.g. want, go, like, help, etc). I will also teach "fringe" words that are more personal in nature (e.g. friend's names, items of interest, etc). A motor plan will hopefully be developed that allows my students to know where to go on the device for certain words, and eventually learn to generate phrases and sentences (think of learning where different apps are on your phone through repeated use). Through your giving, you may be helping give a voice to a student's thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The iPad, turned communication device, will help my students more easily express things such as, "I'm thirsty.", "What's up?!", "My stomach hurts.", "I love WWE.", "I need help.", "I don't want that.", "Let's go.", "That's lit.", "Can we go?". And that's only the beginning. Thank you for considering giving to this project.
