The gap in reading ability, particularly in vocabulary and comprehension, widens drastically during the middle school years, essentially marking those who can read and those who cannot, correlating to a divide along socioeconomic lines -- the haves and the have-nots. I am 100% convinced by research and personal experience that a love for reading fosters a love for learning. This is one reason why in addition to my curriculum, I try to squeeze in opportunities for students to pick, read, and present a 1-minute book review of any book they want. I try to get them to the library to browse, checkout, and exchange books so they can think of themselves as readers ... and find a book they love and can share with others. Adding library time to a 55-minute, curriculum-driven class period is a challenge so having great books in my room would really help! Access to an engaging, modern, culturally responsive in-class library will help my students develop a love of reading and subsequently learning, improve their literacy and very importantly, positively impact their social emotional learning skills as students explore character choice and empathy. Thank you so much for considering my project. xxx
