  • Help Support Mrs. Fedrick's Kinders in Remote &Social Distant Learning

    Funded Feb 6, 2021

I cannot thank you enough for supporting my project, "Help Support Mrs. Fedrick's Kinders in Remote & Socially Distant learning." This project was created to help fund new activities and technology to support student learning where hands on, collaborative learning with various materials was not an option in our COVID-19 teaching this year. Sadly sharing manipulatives and sharing art materials was not an option this year. So how do we pivot using technology? One of the best options I found, which is what this project funded was Boom Cards. Boom Learning was a user friendly tool appropriate for kindergarten age students and I was thrilled to have discovered them.

Boom Cards cover all academic areas and allow for students to manipulate digitally to build words or count items to add while also allowing them to increase independence as they learn how the Boom Cards work. They can be saved within the students' accounts to revisit and play again. For a small fee I can track my students' performance to adjust my assignments accordingly. My students love Boom Cards. I like them because they are interactive and not just watching an educational video on a particular academic skill. They love the feedback when they were successful, the animated nature of the cards and working together to complete a deck was most fun. In the classroom we are able to use the Boom Cards in the whole group and 1:1. I can wheel my laptop to students desks because initially we were so limited in our movement in class. It was a much desired choice in class, to use the Boom Card or get called on to complete one we were working on as a group.

When fully remote or in hybrid mode it was reported by families that completing the Boom Cards was the most desired asynchronous assignment so it caused less stress for families with less motivated students. For students who were particularly difficult to motivate to complete tasks at home, getting to finish up with Boom Cards was a motivator and helped families to facilitate the remote work.

Even though we are returning to more "normal" teaching and learning as we transition into post-COVID life the Boom Cards is something I will be able to continue to use in class and offer as an option at home. I will also keep my current class's accounts live throughout the summer so they can revisit Boom Card decks on rainy days and keep their skills sharp! Thank you so much for supporting this project!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Fedrick's Kinders

  • Keeping the Learning Alive in Kindergarten!

    Funded Aug 12, 2020

I cannot thank you enough for your contribution to this project. At the start of this school year COVID and learning from home is still a harsh reality. Thanks to your support I was able to put together home learning kits for each of my students so that I would know what materials they had at home for their remote learning days. These materials were put together in the kits, pictured in this thank you packet, is an amazing gift. It's peace of mind to know exactly what I can plan and assign knowing I know what students have at home to complete things like math tasks (you can see a student creating a pattern with his math tools) and cut, paste and color projects (the shape apple tree) at home. Not all students have the same resources and by sending home the bags full of supplies home with the students at the start of the school year; it was a gift to the families, the students and me. The students were motivated to work from home after leaving their first in-person days armed with the tools they needed to succeed at home. The smiles were adorable and I can see the materials as I review pictures uploaded when assignments are submitted online. We cannot thank you enough for supporting our learning in kindergarten!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Fedrick's Kinders

My kindergarten students were just hitting that sweet spot where they start to have those "ah ha" moments in class and we get that satisfaction that they've arrived...active learners showing their stuff. The COVID-19 cheated them from sharing that joy IN class with their classmates and teachers! Help us keep it alive at home and through remote learning!
