As a first grade team, we created manipulative kits for students to use at home. With a short time to get these kits ready, we used the supplies we already had in the classroom. This has greatly impacted what we will have once we are back at school. This project is to replenish the supplies used for students at home. When students return to the classroom we will need new manipulatives to teach math in a more student-centered way. First graders need hands-on materials to practice math concepts. Ideas exist in student's minds and manipulatives help them construct an understanding of ideas that they can connect to mathematical vocabulary and symbols. Math Manipulatives build student's confidence by giving them a way to test and confirm their reasoning. Because we have been using the classroom set for home learning, when students return to the classroom they will need linking cubes to practice addition and subtraction concepts as well as check their thinking. Base ten blocks will help them visualize place value. During small group time, we use double-sided counters for counting and addition games.
