Students will get to select their own independent reading books from the classroom library. Through these books they will be able to explore and experience different settings, people, points of view, and themes that interest them. By having a selection of books that are specifically written for their age group they will be able to relate, develop, and grow as individuals through literature. Reading increases our understanding of our own identity, improves empathy and gives us an insight into the world view of others. In addition to the health benefits, reading for pleasure has social benefits and can improve our sense of connectedness to the wider community. The goal is for students to fall in love with the idea of reading for pleasure, instead of only reading for academic advancement. Not only do I want give students access to a wide range of books, I am also hoping to create an environment that motivates them to read. A comfy place for them to kick back, relax, and enjoy a good book.
