Due to coronavirus and distance learning, our semester-long Design and Engineering group projects involving woodworking, graphic design, and coding had to be put on hold. I am using this new and unexpected online school model to transition my class from teacher-led projects to student-led passion projects. Seven of my 55 ninth graders declared that they wanted to learn how to paint for their Passion Project, and in order to do that, they need basic painting supplies. They have already learned fundamental illustration skills in our class, such as using a two-point perspective, understanding color theory, and creating compelling graphic layouts. These individual projects will help them "level up" their skills in a new medium while also giving them a creative, off-line outlet during these stressful and uncertain times. Some of these students are interested in selling their paintings to be able to help contribute financially to their families, as many of their parents have lost their jobs due to the pandemic. I will be safely delivering kits of materials to each of my students so that they can finish the school year with a personally meaningful, hands-on design project, and I hope I can count on your support to make it happen!
