I have been teaching for 5 years. In those years, I've learned a lot about what's best for learners. The last 3 years, I've begun implementing flexible seating in my classroom. We currently have one wobble stool, several yoga mats, exercise balls, pillows, a couch, child-sized rolling chairs, rubber mats, lap desks, a coffee table, regular stools, and even a standing table that I found at a yard sale for $5! We also, of course, have your standard classroom desks and tables that were given to us by the school district.
I've been collecting flexible seating options for years, and each year I add a little more, using my personal funds. Buying flexible seating options for my classroom has always been worth it to me because of the joy and focus it brings to my little learners whenever they get to choose their own seat for the day. Flex seating is all about providing choices in a structured way to learners who struggle in a traditional classroom setting - and even those learners who don't necessarily struggle to sit still truly enjoy having other options than a hard, boring chair.
This past year, I added in Wobble Stool #1, and it quickly became the favorite seating option in my classroom. My students adored it. They would even argue over it! They truly love that thing, because it allows them to sit at a regular table, but gives them the ability to wiggle and move comfortably. Unfortunately for my kiddos, wobble stools aren't cheap, and I just couldn't afford to buy more at almost $70 each. That's why the majority of my project will be funding wobble stools- enough for at least half of my students to use one at once.
