This is my second year as the librarian for our middle school, and I want the library to be the students' favorite place in the school. One way I feel that I can accomplish that is by providing my students with a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment that will draw them into the library and make it a place they want to come and read. In our library, we have a loveseat and chair that is over TEN years old that must be replaced. It has a fabric covering, so after ten years of being used by middle schoolers, you can imagine what it may look like. Also, being fabric I worry about headlice as well as the spreading of germs, especially during this pandemic. I do my best to sanitize it and spray it, but it is just time for it to go! The students are not happy about the possibility of not having furniture, so my goal is to provide my students with a new leather loveseat and two chairs. When my students come into the library, they all race to the old, worn furniture or even a spot on the floor. Once I remove the old, I know they will be disappointed. Having new furniture for them to use will make this space a much more inviting place that they won't want to leave. I have a very limited library budget, and what I do have I use to purchase new books as well as book repair materials. The students will be excited and thrilled to have a new, clean place to read.
