  • Help Nurture Reading During this Time

    Funded Aug 12, 2020

When NYC schools closed last spring due to the pandemic, I could have never have imagined I wouldn't see my students again until the fall. When schools closed, it felt so unexpected and I wish I packed my students book bags with tons of books they could read at home.

As an ELA teacher in the South Bronx, I know my students' home libraries are not excessive and I knew that I needed to get books into my student's hands and homes. With your generous contribution and gift I was able to do this!

You can clearly see the smiles on my children's faces while they are enjoying reader's workshop. While we are remotely learning now, I know that my students have books in their hands. That could have not been possible without you!

My students, their families and myself extend our gratitude. Thank you for making a difference in my students' lives!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Leuzzi

During the school closure, we now sit screen to screen not face to shoulder. There are many online platforms for students to read. However because of the lack of internet, and some of my students are in shelters reading a book has become a challenge. I'm afraid of these long-lasting effects on their reading. We've worked so hard this school building our reading skills- I don't want my students to fall behind because of where they are. Having an actual book that is engaging in their hand will keep the love of reading alive. I can’t replicate what happens in the classroom but having a shared text can help stimulate and engage my students and keep the thread of independent reading going.
