The novels I am requesting will allow many of our students to either see a new culture in literature, as well as the struggles and history that culture has experienced, or give a face to their own unique struggles and experiences. Our current selection does not match our current demographic, and I want that to change, because we need to read and experience these stories before we can completely dive into our social justice curriculum. I am planning on teaching the novel Dear Martin and then later the novel Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood. The book I have chosen will help tremendously.
