In Virginia, our physical schools have been shut down for the rest of the year. In my classroom, connections and relationships are key to my students' success as learners. The most successful way we have been able to connect during this time of Virtual Learning is through reading, specifically through our Virtual Read Alouds which I have been recording and putting on Google Classroom. In the classroom, read alouds were more meaningful and students enjoyed the read alouds even more when they could follow along with a physical copy of the book. This project will help me send copies of our current and our next two virtual read alouds: Fortunately, The Milk, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone into their hands. This will allow students to read "with" me during our time apart. Students become better readers when they read with someone, and our connection as a community is solidified through storytelling. My students have had their worlds completely turned upside down with the closure of our school and the introduction of virtual learning. This is one small way in which I can help us maintain our connection and keep our small classroom community strong during this time.
