Empowering Scientific Minds
Funded Sep 13, 2012Yesterday my classes were able to finish their science fair projects. The projector was an invaluable resource. To kick off science fair month, my students watched a nova special on making the Easter Island statues "walk" and then were able to try it themselves using two-by-fours and string. It was like a mini project and a peek into the real world of science and research all in one. The ability to see the scientific method in action and to then try it themselves was exciting to them and inspired many to take on engineering projects like building bridges and designing kites.
I had four ESL girls design a popsicle stick bridge that held 42 textbooks before it buckled. I can't tell you how amazing it is that 4 quiet Latina girls were able to take home the prize on bridge building this year.
From the Rapa Nui experiment to final day of bridge smashing, my students were able to get through information faster and with better mastery thanks to the projector. We watched the Mythbusters take on Mentos and soda, and try to drown in quicksand. We saw other students present their projects on Youtube. We even got to post our own videos to Youtube. The students were so proud! I was able to show all of my classes a bridge that held 42 books and why a kite tail is so important. Normally, these things would only connect with the 25 students in a particular class. Now, armed with an iPhone and a projector, we watched it in every class. So, thank you again for your support. It has meant the world to my students and has kept them on the fair side of the digital divide.”
With gratitude,
