  • Cozy Corner for Calm Down Strategies and Social Emotional Learning!

    Funded May 5, 2020

Thank you so much for our Cozy corner cube. Although we weren't able to use it last year as planned due to Covid. It is already well loved this year! The students love having a place they can sit in or stand next to to use their break time as needed. I have outfitted it with some stuffed animals such as a Star bellied Speech, a Class Dojo Monster, and a worry monster to make it feel comfy. We store all our calm down tools on top! This has been such a positive space for the children to go and We greatly appreciate it!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kristin Marino

  • iPads Build Family/School Partnerships and STEM Skills!

    Funded May 6, 2020

I wanted to take some time to thank you all for donating to my project! This school year has not been like any other and the added technology has really supported my learners. Although our schools plan includes PreK-3 back in school full time it is still very different than any other year before. We started ten days later than normal and have had to not only teach our regular routines and expectations but have also had to teach many new technology skills to prepare for a remote learning situation, if needed. These added iPads have really increased the technology tips and tricks I have been able to teach them as well as increased parent involvement and communication during these uncharted times.

After purchasing cases and screen protectors for the new devices and making them look exactly the same (app and screen appearance), they were ready for student use! We have been using them for reading practice programs such as Lexia, Raz-Kids, and as a listening center. We have been using them to post our work and complete work through the use of Seesaw which is required by my district. For math practice we have been playing various apps and virtual manipulatives to increase our understanding and review of math we may have missed during the spring shutdown.

The most exciting thing for this year in particular is that I have many students with Individualized education plans who require added support throughout the day. The simplicity of an iPad and the touch screen has really made these students able to participate in all aspects of the lesson without having to worry about typing, logging in, and not being able to find a website. Many of these kids also have occupational therapy on their plans and the use of a touch screen over a touchpad is very helpful for them.

The iPads have also allowed the students to post their STEAM creations from our weekly STEAM challenges to their Seesaw journals which lets them have more voice and consistency when sharing what they did at school with their parents. Thank you so much again, my students and I are very grateful for this opportunity to increase our technology use, skills, and sharing with our parents.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kristin Marino

Through the use of iPads and some amazing online tools/apps, my students can now be in school and share their daily learning with their families. Using Google Docs, parents can see their children's writing as soon as their child hits share. Using ClassDojo, parents can now see uploaded photos or videos of their child that are specific to them. No longer do I post as a teacher a photo that everyone sees. Now I can specify what email address can access each photo or video. Confidentiality is prioritized, but parents get quick visual access into what is happening in their child's day. Currently I have one personal iPad for 24 children. I also have one Dash robot to teach my students coding with that utilizes the iPad Apps. The students love this STEM Coding time but lack of extra iPads limits the amount of students who can code at one time. My goal is that technology and coding skills should be a tool for all, accessed as easily as pencil and paper!
