Several times each week my students and I have the opportunity to have a class meeting. This meeting time is used to help us connect with each other, learn essential interpersonal skills, and resolve any issues that might be occurring in the classroom. Our class meeting time helps us to create an inclusive, caring, and safe learning environment for all of my students. Our class meeting time is essential for our class to practice the character traits that will help us grow into successful, mindful, productive citizens. During our class meeting time, we focus on building belonging, kindness, gratitude, happiness, perseverance, conflict resolution skills, motivation, tolerance, friendship, and responsibility within our classroom. Each week our class meetings focus on a specific theme. Through the anchor texts, we are able to discuss difficult topics, make connections, analyze texts, identify recurring and connecting themes, foster tolerance, and celebrate the differences and strengths of ourselves and others. These books will be the launchpad of the social-emotional learning that is happening in our classroom.
