This project is all about exposing my students to mentor texts that support inclusion and diversity. Did you know that only 10% of children's books have African Americans as the main character, 7% Asian Pacific Islander, and 1% First Nations? (Data based on 2018 publishing statistics complied by the Cooperative Children's Book Center, School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison) There are more main characters that are animals at 27%. However, there are so many beautiful options that help beat these statistics. I want to ensure that my students have a variety of main characters to learn from. We use children's books as mentor texts weekly to teach reading, writing, social emotional learning, and so much more. Having access to these books would be incredible for their overall learning. They would be able to hear about different cultures, backgrounds, and ways of life.
