Calm classrooms help students feel more engaged. According to the calm classroom website, "calm classrooms have proven to increase student engagement, improve attendance and academic performance, and decrease behavioral problems."
In todays world, the stressor of daily life can cause children to feel frustrated, overwhelmed, and anxious. Through a study of 25 first graders whose classroom was revamped over 4 months students quoted: "I feel relaxed, when I'm relaxed I'm more ready to learn;" "In my classroom I can learn because I'm comfortable reading here."
Many factors can threaten a positive classroom environment: problems from home, pressure from testing, lack of motivation, and many students exposed to high rates of trauma.
My students will benefit from the calm classroom resources I have requested by having a classroom that is not overstimulating. I'm hoping to replace my bright chairs, tables, bulletin boards, etc. for more natural bulletin boards and neutral tones around the classroom. This will help reduce distractions. Furniture is another key factor in creating a calming room. Having beanbag chairs/stools will help my students feel comfortable and they will have a place to sit at when they become stressed or anxious. Having a table placed in this space will be especially helpful, so my students can fill out a reflection sheet. I will be able to designate a space where students can go when the need to regulate their emotions. Having an organized classroom is extremely important for my students. Having the storage bins I have requested will help my students maintain a physical organized setting. This will support classroom routines and procedures to create a safe classroom environment. Learning is optimal when students feel safe and comfortable.
