After a few years of consideration and research, it has come clear to me that flexible seating is what is best for students. Student voice and choice builds trust and mutual respect. Research shows that "when students aren’t trying to hold themselves still in their chairs, they can integrate auditory, visual, and tactile systems of the body". It is also shown that an interactive and changing classroom setting, positively impacts behavior. One teacher said, "I have found that letting the students sit where it is comfortable for them, keeps their attention more focused on me and teaches them to have control over their learning environment." Classrooms should be friendly and welcoming, where students feel they belong. A simple change to seating can help to make that a reality. Rethinking the classroom environment and giving students options opens up their possibilities for learning. Research goes on to say that flexible seating "encourages greater collaboration, communication, and interaction between students and teachers alike". There are many advantages for students in a classroom with flexible seating. I hope that through your donation you will help me to provide what is best for my students for many years to come.
