Many ninth graders in my regular English 1 classes have developed a dislike for reading. A majority of these students struggle to connect to literature because they fail to see the relevance of what they have been made to read to their own lives or culture. The novels I am requesting are novels that are relevant to the struggles and issues facing many of the teenagers I work with on a daily basis. By providing novels that are culturally diverse and high interest, I hope to engender within each a love for reading. This new love for reading will hopefully put each of them on a path to success in their other classes and in their future endeavors.
