The materials I am requesting for this project will live in on my classroom bookshelves, but more importantly, they will come to life in the hands, minds, and hearts of student readers. After nearly a year of online learning, holding a tangible book in their hands, and getting lost in the author's craft is exactly what students need to accelerate and bolster their literacy skills. NVAC Reading Literature Standards R.L.7.1 (Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text) R.L.7.2 (Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text) and R.L.7.3 (Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact) are wrapped up in independent choice reading time. Throughout the year students will be challenged to discuss, analyze and interpret their independent reading novels. By ground their analysis in the text itself, and being able to point to the words on the page, students are able to draw meaningful connections and inferences from their choice books. By building "book love" in the classroom, students can transform their preconceptions that reading is a "chore." Finding the right book, and falling in love with the story can create life-long readers and students who celebrate independent reading.
