Audiobooks provide an emotional connection to the narrator, which in turn motivates students to keep listening. In my 6th grade English Language Arts classes, I have many reluctant readers who loathe independent reading because they cannot find the right book to hold their attention. Lack of being able to focus, visualize, and read for an extended length of time impedes their comprehension skills. By having a CD player, audio CDs, and book sets, students will be engaged readers. Being able to listen to a professional reader will open the world of reading to them. Three-five days a week, my students will rotate through 3 stations during our 90-minute class. One station will be a listening center where students will read along with an audio CD. This grouping of students gives me valuable time to work with small groups on reading and writing skills. It also gives the students an enjoyable time reading a book together. By having students read the same book, they will be able to discuss the story, empathize with the characters, make predictions, and so much more. Engaging lessons and activities will be centered around a variety of reading, writing, and speaking standards. With the use of audiobooks, the children will show growth in fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. They will also increase reading stamina, acquire better listening skills, and improve visualization skills. Through reading, collaborating, and writing, students will find enjoyment in their rigorous assignments which will lead to a positive reading community. Please help my students discover the need to read.
