For most younger readers, the enjoyment of reading doesn't happen until students are able to figure out new words. When students can use books in a series, they can concentrate on the story happening as opposed to having to decode all new words. Books in a series have the same characters, the same storyline and often times similar endings. Students get to know the characters; they become like friends. Both series chosen are chosen specifically for that reasons. In one series the characters are first or second grade students and the adventures they have through their scout troop. In the second series, the character is a grandfatherly gentleman with a cat and includes all their new discoveries.
