The first and most obvious benefit of an aquarium in the classroom is the built-in biology lessons. The diversity in an aquarium provides a real-life example of complicated subjects like anatomy, food-chain, and animal life-cycle. Saltwater aquariums are a great way to facilitate real-world hands-on learning over a wide variety of subjects and to a wide variety of ability levels. Students will be introduced to real-world practical applications of mathematics by taking measurements of water temperature, salinity, nitrates, and PH levels. Recording each measurement taken will also provide students with data collection and interpretation skills. An aquarium will also facilitate the development of several soft skills including responsibility, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Each and every student will have an active role in the maintenance and care of the aquarium and fish. Being responsible and caring for a living creature is a great experience for all students.
