When students were pressed into at home, virtual learning during the height of the Covid 19 pandemic, I was extremely worried about the academic losses my students might experience. Most of them struggle with learning disabilities, and I knew not having in-person learning would be detrimental to their progress. I have found, however, since the students have returned to in-person school, they have been able, for the most part, to overcome that time away and make necessary acade
mic progress.
What I didn't expect, was to see the emotional and behavioral needs of my students increase dramatically. Children at younger and younger ages are demonstrating difficulty in regulating their emotions, which is having a negative impact on their academic learning.
The equipment and supplies requested will help to build a calming corner in my classroom, where my students can come to take a requested break before returning to their classroom. The yoga balls are intended to replace chairs in my classroom, as I have a large number of students with health related impairments that make it difficult, or impossible, for them to sit still and work. These balls will create alternate seating in my classroom so students can have some movement while seated, so they can focus more effectively on their work. The paper, stickers, and incentives will help us continue our program of behavior trackers and incentive rewards. Students have been very successful with this program, and some student behavior and emotional regulation has improved to the point they no longer need my support. Please help me continue a successful program so that my students will be able to remain in their classroom, fully access their general education, and create positive relationships with their peers.
