Bee Bots are a wonderful way to introduce students as young at 5 years old to digital technologies that help teach computational thinking, math, literacy and coding! The possibilities and learning opportunities are endless with Bee Bots. With the funding of this project, students will have access to Bee Bots during their weekly library centers as well as for special, whole group lessons. Currently, our only access to Bee Bots is through our county's technology department where resources are shared with 29 other schools. Students do not learn as much with spotty use of Bee Bots as they have to refresh their memory of how to use them again with each application. With weekly use, students will spend less time learning procedures and more time learning. With Bee Bots in the library, I plan to start introducing common coding in Kindergarten, teaching forward, backward, left, and right directions. Once procedures are learned, students will retell stories read aloud using Bee Bot programming, proving comprehension has taken place. They will also be used to help students identify letters and sight words as well as practice phonics skills. Bee Bots will increase student engagement in the form of play and allow students to use technologies that are not available to them in their home setting. Students learn best when they are in charge of their learning. Bee Bots help them take charge of their learning and set the foundation for more changing coding tasks.
