In our Title 1 funded school, students in AIS Reading (Academic Intervention Service) are encouraged to take home texts that are at their instructional level AND that they are interested in. Students may not have texts at home or able to visit the public library. This project was created to add more engaging texts that are diverse for students to see themselves in the text and motivate students to practice reading at home. The home school connection in regards to reading is essential in building a lifelong reader. Students sometimes have a difficult time when selecting texts from our classroom library that they are interested in. Often times as a reader, it is important to see yourself in a text, I have selected some texts that have diverse characters in order for my students to see themself in the texts they have. Many of the texts selected are shorter texts which students can read in a night or two so they do not feel overwhelmed but the reading. Students also will benefit from nonfiction texts, as our library does not have many nonfiction texts. Chairs for our reading corner in the classroom are included in this project for students to have an inviting area to come to at the beginning or end of the school day.
