Handmaid book arts connects the visual arts and media arts. Cutting mats and steel rulers are common in professional artist environments, and as artists, knowing how to incorporate these tools as they work improves artist mastery. Book arts also require precision and attention to the small details of paper, measurement, folding, and cutting. Students will be able to accurately measure and safely cut paper to create functional art designs. Having cutting boards and steel rulers is important because these tools are specifically designed for precise measuring, folding, and cutting paper as students use them to create their art book. Students demonstrate the mastery of book arts through precise details in their artwork. Not having tools like this limits what students can create and learn about book arts. This lesson enables students to create a handmaid art book to tell their immigration story. They can creatively combine many art forms like drawing, painting, and collages. They can integrate comprehension of learning the English language with meaningful imagery and home languages as they narrate their own life stories. When students make personal connections to learning through art, they progress and find confidence in strengthening their English skills.
