  • Keep the Reading Momentum with Chapter Book Series!

    Funded Dec 3, 2024

As we are returning after our winter break, we have almost all of the books from this Donors Choose project processed and available on our library shelves for checkout. This section of our library has grown so much that I needed to do a shelf shift and expand the area to accommodate the new titles!

We have added so many wonderful new transitional chapter books, and our students are so excited! They gravitate to the titles that are part of a series - they love having a choice (because so many of these series do not need to be read in order) and they love knowing that when they return the following week, there will be more to choose from!

As an example, we had a group of third-grade boys all from one class converge on our new titles in the Captain Awesome series - between them, they checked almost all of them out. And now we have repeat customers coming back for more Captain Awesome! These new, current, and engaging series are helping our school grow into an enthusiastic reading culture!”

  • Bring on the Animals!

    Funded Feb 26, 2024

I was able to spend time this afternoon processing and cataloging all of these beautiful books - they will be put out on the shelves later today and our students can start checking them out! I plan to put many of display and I know they will fly off of the shelves. I have seen an increase in interest in nonfiction titles this year and I am so excited that our students will have even more options to choose from to expand both their knowledge and their reading skills.

Your generosity helped make this project happen and these titles will be enjoyed and explored by students at all grade levels on our building - I am so grateful!”

  • Bring on the STEM in Maker Space!

    Funded Mar 8, 2023

Wow!! These STEM materials are a huge hit in our Maker Space area of our library.

Had I known how interesting the light up blocks would be, I would have requested more sets - these are hugely popular! Our younger grades worked as a class team to create a beautiful design all together at our carpet area so that each class could see what the light up blocks are and how they worked. Then we had them in a station in Maker Space - the students love building with them and working with the various functions. The sound function is very cool!

The design blocks are also very popular. We had students creating a very large WWE Wrestling Arena out of the various shapes - they worked so hard on that and it was amazing!

Thank you again for your generosity and please know how much we are using and enjoying these materials!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Baartz

  • Developing Storytelling and Language Skills for Our Primary Students

    Funded Dec 27, 2022

All of the flannel sets and books are labeled and ready for use with our brand new flannel board! We are going to be sharing The Snowy Day today by Ezra Jack Keats and then giving students time to explore the flannel pieces and retell the story on their own - I can't wait!

The small flannel sets are unpacked, labeled and ready for use in our Maker Space area. Today, they'll be able to share and explore these sets while creating and telling stories. They will collaborate with one another and practice their verbal storytelling skills.

We do not have anything like these wonderful flannel sets and storytelling kits in our media center. I am thrilled that our students are going to have the opportunity to explore these new materials and expand on their literacy development through storytelling! Thank you for your generosity and support!”

  • Jump into Early Reading!

    Funded Feb 9, 2023

The early readers arrived last week and I am so excited to share that they are processed, cataloged and out on our shelves ready to be checked out!

We were able to order a great selection of both fiction and nonfiction early readers - most are new titles that we did not already have. The fiction titles included several series - series are wonderful to have in this reading level because when our growing readers get hooked on characters and a series, they want to read the next one. This keeps their enthusiasm going and keeps them reading!

The nonfiction early readers are very popular with our primary grades - books about animals, transportation, dinosaurs, volcanoes, weather and more! They are going to fly off the shelves in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your support and generosity! I am thrilled to be able to provide this amazing set of early reader titles for our students to enjoy and share!”

  • Bring on the Award Titles!

    Funded Sep 9, 2022

Thank you so much for donating to this project and helping to see it fulfilled! This collection of award winning titles have been added to our circulation and have already started checking out to our students.

Because this set of books included picture books, biographies, chapter books and nonfiction, we have been able to display the titles on top of shelves throughout the entire media center. Our students love browsing new books which we showcase facing outward to grab their attention. Students from all grade levels have been able to explore and checkout these new books!

The math-based picture books have been particularly popular. When those books are returned and go back up on the shelf in our picture book section, they often check right back with a student in a different class.

Being able to offer new, relevant, high-quality, and exciting titles in our Media Center engages our growing readers. Thank you again for helping us be able to continue offering a wide range of genres, authors, and books to our students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Baartz

  • Sharing Inspiring Biographies

    Funded Mar 1, 2022

We have had these new books processed and out on the shelves for circulation! I have them prominently displayed in our biography section and our students have been discovering them and checking them out. Their curiosity to learn about new famous and historical figures is wonderful!

Thank you so much for your support of our growing readers and of our school. Our biography collection was in desperate need of updating - we had a large number of out of date titles and the collection was rarely looked at. Now students browse through the beautiful new display of biographies and it's like we have a whole new section of the library for them!”

  • Let's Talk About Our Feelings Through Books

    Funded Dec 9, 2021

This beautiful set of picture books arrived and we got them processed, barcoded and out onto our displays. These SEL books started circulating with our students right away and I think almost all of them are currently checked out!

The past two years have been a challenge for everyone. As we are moving forward through this school year, teachers are finding that extra support is needed to help our students navigate their transition back into a school setting. Having all of these titles that support Social-Emotional Learning is critical. Being able to open up timely discussions and conversations around these topics through story is so important.

Thank you for supporting our school and our community of learners.”

  • Grow Our Graphic Novels!

    Funded Dec 27, 2021

These graphic novels hit the shelves today after processing on a teacher work day. When our students are back in the building, they will fly off of the shelves. I am so excited to share such a wide variety of graphic novels with our students and several series. Nothing is more exciting than watching a growing reader get hooked on a new series AND being able to offer them another title in the series to keep up their enthusiasm and momentum! Thank you for your support and helping us develop a current, relevant, and high quality graphic novel section in our library!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Baartz

In March of 2020, prior to our school closing for in-person instruction due to COVID19, we sent our students home with an extra library book. We did not know then that we would not be returning for the remainder of the school. While some of our books came back, our school's library still has over 800 library books that have not been returned. As we are preparing to re-enter our school for live instruction, we need to grow our library collection with new, current, and relevant reading materials for all of our students in grades K through 5th. There is a specific question that I hear often from my students: "Do you have another (insert series here)?" Captain Underpants, Bad Kitty, Junie B Jones, etc. As the Media Specialist, I want to encourage and grow this reading momentum of our students by being able to give them another in their series and keep their engagement and enthusiasm going! Our library is in significant need of more series in the early reader and transitional chapter book range. Every item on our DonorsChoose request list is a set of books from a popular series. I would be ecstatic to add these series to our circulating collection and be able to offer these titles to our students. Thank you for your support from the hearts of all of our young readers!
