Fourth grade is a great age to help students to love reading. Listening to a more fluent reader read books that are a little above their reading level is a great way to teach this love! We are need a classroom set of Wonder. This book will expose my students to challenging texts which they usually fall in love with as well as teach them an amazing life lesson. Having a teacher read aloud to students helps increase their reading level because it models fluent reading for students. By following along and seeing how the teacher emphasizes different words, pauses at commas and periods, and pronounces difficult words, students can increase their own reading fluency. So far this year we have read the books Nightmares, The Giving Tree, and Harry Potter. Through these, my students have not only become better readers, they have also developed a love for reading. One of my favorite things as a teacher is when students come back after many years and say that their love for reading started in my class! It is a goal of mine every year to make kids love reading!
