I am a child development and child guidance teacher with high school students. The basis of my class is to encourage the career path of child guidance/development, whether it be a child care work, day care worker, school age teacher, coach, professional babysitter, or social worker. My class also consists of parenting skills for the future and the do's and dont's of family and raising a child. My goal is to have hands-on activities with the "care" of a child (clothing, feeding, swaddling, etc.) The importance of this is to not just teach the children about what having a child is like but to teach them the responsibilities they will have when working with young children. I want them to realize that it is not as simple as "babysitting" all day but that there are responsibilities and precautions that you have to take to help the development and safety of a child.
My project will be "Child Care Centers" and what this will consist of is a set up of centers where a different responsibility for each baby is presented. They will have to either correct what is wrong with the center in regard to safety or they will have to show the correct manipulation for that station such as clothing, feeding, changing the baby, and etc.
Some may question, is this too much for high school students to be learning? Is this too in depth? No, as they are preparing for their future careers, it is nothing but important for these students to have these practices already in mind and practiced. As adults we all know by now that all jobs require "experience". Along with my students being able to observe the schools in our district this will help with the learning of working with children.
