Our kids love science and for most of them, doing hands-on investigations level the playing field. We cannot control what prior experiences or knowledge our kids come to school with, but when we have them conduct science experiments they all can use the same language and have the same shared experience. Students focus on making careful observations in order to identify the organism the bone might have come from and the type of bone it might be. Students then organize their bones into a skeleton, again focusing on careful and precise observations as they decide where to place each bone. The purpose of this lesson is for students to engage in the practices of a paleontologist.
