My students recently completed an opinion writing project on whether flexible seating or assigned seating should be utilized in our classroom. I had students arguing for both sides, but ultimately most of them argued for flexible seating. They learned from conducting research that flexible seating helps students' grades increase, students' individuality, decision making, and problem-solving also increase with flexible seating options. My students also argued that behavior problems and side discussions decrease with flexible seating options. So, they have persuaded me! I believe that they are responsible enough and interested enough to give this flexible seating craze a serious try. We will use the variety of seating options, which I have requested, in the classroom to meet the variety of learning needs that my students have. They have researched all of these and think that options to sit on the floor while having their own space to write (e.g., a lap desk) will be helpful for them, they think that having a yoga ball will help them stay engaged in whole-group lessons while still being able to wiggle. My students think that the wobble-chairs will provide a similar purpose as the ball, but will likely be a safer option.
