I learned long ago that successful teaching relies heavily on student engagement and that student engagement depends on how students feel in my classroom and my ability to get to know them on a personal basis. The strategies I deploy for improving student engagement include a project based learning teaching style that encourages students to communicate through art and technology. Students create both paper and digital art in my classroom to show their learning. I design lessons to expand student freedom by employing strategies designed to provide choice in how students reflect on course content. Student art projects also help them communicate what they know to their classmates.
