Many of my students do not talk and rely on technology to communicate with others. These materials will allow my students to communicate with their teachers, friends, and family, while allowing me to assess their specific needs and teach them how to use the communication application most appropriate for them. During speech and language sessions, students require active modeling; modeling helps them to learn their new communication language, much in the way that we learned our first language. An iPad with communication applications will allow me to effectively model as part of speech and language therapy. Many of my students do not yet have a communication device. For some of them, this will be their first opportunity at electronic communication during speech and language services. A scenario where this communication device could be used: a student is thirsty. After being being shown how to to use this device to say 'drink', the student can then independently make this request. This is just the beginning of language development for a child with a communication device. The most important thing that we do during the day is speak with each other; it is my goal to help my students say what they want, when they want, and how they want to with technology. With all of the technology that exists, these students should have opportunities to speak with others as they wish to. Participating in school lessons and extra curricular activities should be as inclusive as possible, and communication helps to make this a reality.
