I want to help my students develop their creativity. Brain Builders are open-ended materials that my students can use to explore, create, build, and play with in the morning during breakfast time. Brain Building time is a morning routine that can set a happy tone for our day. It will help my students wake up, warm up and get ready to think. I believe that without time for unstructured inquiry, imaginative play, and an opportunity for students to develop social skills, we are doing our children a disservice. I believe that, without time to explore, create, build, and play, I fail to provide my students with what a whole child needs to succeed. I want to use STEM building kits, magnetic blocks, and other building sets as Brain Builders for my first graders.
Brain Builders will increase small motor skills, promote reasoning skills, provide problem solving opportunities, and increase creativity. They can improve science, engineering and math skills while having fun. Creativity can lead to better writing, better storytelling, and imaginative thinking. Social skills and teamwork can also be nurtured through creative play and working in small cooperative groups.
I also want to promote the use of Big Books in my classroom. I want to build a "Big Book" center for my classroom. I need a Big Book storage container to make the books I currently have more accessible to my students. I would like to provide them with pointers to make the big books fun to read. I also want to have "sit spots" to help them find an appropriate place to read the big book. This will be done either by themselves or with a partner. Small whiteboards can be used to make their own graphic organizers to promote better understanding when reading the big books.
