Students are expected to be proficient, if not fluent, in the use of technology. The safe and responsible use of this technology is critical to their success in high school, post-secondary education, and when they enter the workforce. Additionally, there are expectations and standards put in place that emphasize the use of technology and research-based projects in the classroom, specifically in science. Unfortunately, lack of public school funding has placed a huge barrier in the way of students getting their hands on this vital technology! Our school has few Chromebooks to share amongst almost 1,000 students. Having regular, reliable access to these Chromebooks will be imperative not only to technological fluency, but to implement these expected research-based projects. Lessons will move from lecture-based to more discovery based. This not only fosters a sense of independence, but is a LOT more fun for the students. Research has emphasized time and time again that the more fun students have while learning, the more likely they are to retain this information. The lessons I teach will be reinforced by the use of these Chromebooks. Group work on these research projects encourages collaboration and cooperation. These Chromebooks will fortify lessons that I teach within the curriculum, like Ecosystems, as well as outside of the curriculum, such as teamwork and being a good digital citizen!
