My goal as a teacher is to provide the student centered learning environment that students need. Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Young students need the flexibility to bounce, rock, and wobble while learning. Sitting in chairs and desks all day long is not comfortable. But being able move while doing your work is engaging, comfortable, and very motivating. Flexible seating helps keep young minds more alert and focused. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. Physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student. For example, picture a student who skipped or didn’t have access to breakfast. As the countdown to lunch approaches, the sound of his or her growling stomach will make it impossibly hard to hear the teacher’s voice. A uncomfortable chair can have the same affect. In my opinion comfortable students are engaged students. Flexible seating helps make learning fun. The results – a more active, engaged, enthusiastic, and relaxed room of students.
