Students who have emerging language can benefit greatly from adding pictures to their communication strategies. For many, this is a stepping stone to talking. For some, it will become their primary mode of communication. Often these kids feel frustrated when they are not able to communicate their wants and needs. They can also miss out on many concepts simply because they do not yet possess the vocabulary to follow along with a lesson or the ability to learn from only verbal instruction. Communication books and visual systems (ie: personal daily schedules) will help our students to be successful throughout the day and with individual tasks. For example, when choosing which lunch they want, a student can select from a group of pictures that represent the options for that day and then independently make a choice by pointing to the picture or handing it to another person. When presented with a task such as washing hands, a picture sequence can assist the child in completing each step of the task independently. A personal daily schedule can help a child to become more independent in making transitions throughout the day. Pictures provide a system for clear communication and help to increase language and decrease frustrations. Laminated color pictures to create schedules, task sequences and communication books are essential for these incredible kids.
