A big part of the curriculum change at my school has been to emphasize music literacy. When I arrived there were only about 5 students who could read music. I have begun by using Orff instruments in my younger grades as well as Kodaly Method to increase literacy.
The next step is too boost my beginning band which consists of my 5th and 6th graders. This group has about 25 kids and while I have plenty of wind instruments to work with, I have almost no percussion instruments. A vibraphone is small and compact enough to move for concerts. Vibraphones are also wonderful for teaching chord progression to percussionist because they sustain a tone and add a visual element to the learning.
