Kids and adults do not like being confined to one spot for six hours a day- we all want choice! Flexible seating is a great implementation to any classroom because it allows students to take ownership of where they sit, allows them to be comfortable, and they become more productive students. Students have become frustrated because they struggle to remain at their desks and get their work accomplished. I worry that with all of the rocking they do with regular classroom chairs, they are going to hurt themselves! With options such as balance balls, wobble chairs, and comfortable stools, students can sit in multiple places, get their wiggles out, be safe, and make better choices throughout the day. I have been noticing that during small group instruction, students jump at the opportunity to sit in different areas of the room, rather than their desk, and they are more motivated to accomplish their work. My students would simply be thrilled if they had more seating choices throughout the day and I believe they would be motivated to make smarter choices. Students in my classroom have been working so hard this year and have grown so much- they already are benefitting from choosing seats during small group instruction and I can only imagine the difference that flexible seating options will make for them. I believe that with these tools my second graders will continue to soar and other students will for years to come.
